Breakdown is a huge sandbox with many challenges to complete and have fun in and Lifeline lets you play as members of the military which is a group that has problems with your group in the main story. In the Year One Survival Edition you get both of the games great expansions (Breakdown and Lifeline) both of which tell a side story with a different angle. All of these features make the game untouched by any zombie game before or after it. Real consequences for your mistake, a realistic inventory space, having the ability to build up your safe houses, bringing other survivors along with you, the need for supplies being a real factor for the group, and the ability to play as multiple characters. When they died they were gone and at times it was a real bummer, just as it would be in real life.Įverything State of Decay does is exactly what I have been begging for out of a zombie game. Their was not re-spawning and no bringing them back to life. The fact that your characters really died when things went wrong. That was another thing that made this game have a real sense of survival. It felt like really trying to survive in a zombie apocalypse and when you failed there was real consequences, like losing a character you worked so hard to build up as one of the top people in the group. The constant need to manage your characters, safe houses, and inventory is one of the things that made State of Decay so great. Graphically the game looks so much better and although it isn’t what originally made this game good it is a huge plus for the Survival Edition as each character model, road, and building looked much better then the Xbox 360 version of the game. I almost forgot how much fun I had with this game and playing it now on the Xbox One has brought back all of the excitement from the deep and unforgiving title that is State of Decay.

That hasn’t changed with the Year One Survival Edition and that is saying a lot considering how much zombie games there are to work with. I put the most hours into it, I was more invested in the characters, and I had so much more to do then any zombie game before it.

When I first played State of Decay on the Xbox 360 back in 2013 I thought it was the best zombie game I have ever played. “Untouched by any zombie game before or after it.”
